Everybody locally is familiar with April's Business of the Month. But not as many know the history of owner Jim Cooley's business we all know as the Oxford Standard.
The paper he has ran since 1984 was purchased from previous owner Bernie Wimmer. Jim, his wife Maria, and their family moved here from McCook. Jim had worked for the newspaper in Limon, CO, his hometown, then later for the McCook Gazette in the printing room. In the Oxford Standard, you will find local, county, and some state level news, local sports, special events, and advertising. Jim also offers additional printing services including stationary, envelopes, advertising posters, raffle tickets, and he even prints utility bills for the city of Orleans.
When asked what has kept him here, he replied that he and his wife are small town people. Maria is from Bertrand originally, and this has been their home for many years.
Internet has not changed his circulation numbers, but he utilizes the internet for collecting information via news releases. He states he was asked to do an online version for his paper, but hasn't considered it yet.
